Pros And Cons Of Vertical Blinds
Making choices is half the fun and the trouble of decorating a home. One of the choices a decorator has to make, whether you are a pro, or are just doing it yourself, is what kind of window blinds to use. Blinds can create an atmosphere or destroy it. Choosing which type of window blinds you need, will depend on the room and the windows you are decorating and the purpose with which you use that room. Every type of blind has its pros and cons. We will look at vertical blinds and see what benefits and disadvantages can be found when you choose to install them in your home.
Vertical blinds are like bell bottom pants, they come in and out of fashion with a passion. People either hate them or love them or do both with equal gusto depending on what the fashion in vogue is.
There are two types of window blinds, those that are pulled to the sides of the window and those tilt. Those drawn to the sides provide a more open feel, great for rooms that require plenty of sunlight. The ones that tilt are more flexible providing privacy and light control that adapts to the specific use that is being given to the room.
Some people feel that vertical blinds are a boring and dry choice when decorating. They think the variety of colors and textures is too limited. This is no longer the case. Gone were the days when white and cream were the only options available. Now your local blinds store holds hundreds of fabrics in a large variety of colors and tones. The texture, material and color you choose will depend on what your decorating project is and how you want to control the lighting.
However this is no longer true, the days of white, beige or nothing at all, are over. There are literally hundreds of fabrics to select from as well as colors and shades galore. This way you can choose the right blind for your room and the decoration you have decided on.
Control options have also evolved. You can have more control over your blinds. There is the typical cord draw system and the chain tilt, but you also now have the wand control. This wand is pulled across the window and turned to operate the louvers, tilting them to the angle you want.
A final variety we will look into is one without the typical chains we are so used to. These have weights attached to the base of each louver. This creates a free flowing blind that can be used as a walk through separation between rooms or sections in a room.
Another type of vertical blinds that is coming into vogue is the one that does not use chains to hold them together but has weights sewn to the bottom of the blind. This keeps them in place without the need of chains. It also allows them to be used as walk through room dividers. Even the size of blind louvers has changed through the years; they are now narrower, 3 inches as opposed to the 5 inches, unless you want them to be wider. That is one of the many options you have to choose from.
