How To Install Roller Shades For Your Windows

Do you find that it is extremely annoying when the sun, as much as you like the sun, comes into the room and you absolutely can not see your television due to the sun glare? How about wanting to keep a room cool or maybe keep a snoopy neighbor from always peeking in? Then you might want to install some roller shades to keep the sun out and keep that nosy neighbor at bay as well.

Things that you will need of course will be the roller shades and hardware that comes with the window shades such as screws and brackets. You will also need a screwdriver and a ladder to complete this project.

Before going out and buying your shades, you will need to figure out whether you want an inside mount or an outside mount. The inside mount is a little bit more difficult to install than the outside mount. So if you decide to do the inside type you need to measure your windows inside dimensions. For the width you will have to measure the top, middle and bottom widths the short width will be the width of the shade. For the actual shade length just take the longest part of the window.

Outside mounting requires that you measure the width and length from the outside of the window frames. With these measurements make sure that you measure far enough to make sure that it is wide enough to keep out the sun on either side of the window. Once all the measurements are complete, it is time to go out and buy the type of roller shades you want. The cost of the window shades will all depend upon their size and the type of material the window shades are made out of.

Even though these are the most common mountings, there is a third one that they call a ceiling mount. You do not actually mount them on the ceiling, instead you make sure that the brackets are placed a little below the ceiling. Measuring is basically done the same as you would with the outside mount.

If you have decided on the inside mount, you need to take the brackets and place them on inside of the window frame or jambs and make sure that when you attach the brackets so that they are even and do not touch the top of the window frame, if it touches you will have difficulty with the shade rolling smoothly. You will do the same thing with the outside mounts brackets, make sure that they are placed evenly on either side of the window this will help make the shade roll easier. Make sure that these brackets do not touch the tops of the windows either.

Even though the two most common mounts have been mentioned, there is an actual third mount that is the ceiling mount. You do not actually mount the brackets to the ceiling, but you do mount them a little below the ceiling. You will measure the same as you would for the outside mount.

There are two different kinds of roller shades, one is called a spring roller and the other one is called a continuous roller. With the spring roller you would place the shade in the brackets you will have a pin that you will then put in the circle hole of the shade. You do the same thing at both brackets. If you have the continuous type you will put the shade in the brackets by first putting the plastic pins that come with the window shades in the bracket. Do this for each bracket.

After you are done, all that is left to do is to make sure that the roller shades are going to work properly. With the spring roller shade pull shade down about 16 inches and then lift off the brackets when rolling it back on to make sure it moves smoothly. With the other type simply pull down and test its smoothness.
